One of the tanneries of Arlei Leather Group, Argentina's leading exporter of tanned leather, is reporting a sharp decline in production. In two years, production at the historic Curtiembre Arlei tannery has halved (from 5000 to just over 2000 hides per day), with nearly 100 contracts already terminated and 200 employees at risk of layoffs.
Everything suggests this isn't an isolated incident, but rather a structural decline. Last fall, Arlei closed its Don Arturo plant, which has never reopened, writes LaConceria.it.
Competition from Brazil and Uruguay, which have lower production costs, has undermined Argentina's competitiveness. China, once a major buyer of finished leather, now prefers to import raw materials, sharply reducing demand for local tanneries.
