Chanel refuses to manufacture snake, crocodile, lizard and other exotic animal leather products

On Monday, the fashion house Chanel announced its refusal to produce products from the leathers of snakes, crocodiles, lizards and other reptiles, the French fashion house has become the largest player in the luxury market, who refused to use these materials, writes BoF.

Bags, shoes and clothing made from the leathers of exotic animals are some of the most expensive items on the luxury market. These products, as a rule, have a higher margin compared to luxury products made from other materials. However, human rights activists have long trumpeted that many leathers are obtained illegally, which threatens the protection of the population of these animal species, and indicate facts of cruelty to animals.

The management of Chanel Fashion House said on Monday that the difficulty in finding responsible suppliers of hides had forced the brand to stop producing exotic hides. The list includes snakes, lizards, crocodiles, stingrays. In a statement, the company said it was working on a new generation of high-end products using a variety of materials.

Global luxury market experts believe that after Chanel's announcement, other luxury brands will follow the fashion house example. Since after last year’s decision by Gucci to stop using fur in the manufacture of products, many other luxury brands have taken similar steps. On the other hand, it is also said that the demand for the latest collection of Chanel crocodile leather products, which was released by Bernd in 2018, may increase significantly. Currently, the classic Chanel python clutch is offered on the $ 10300 brand website, the price is almost twice as high as similar items made from calfleather.
