One of the greatest fashion figures of the last 50 years and the ambassador of Made in Italy in the world has passed away, writes the Italian publication fashionmagazine.it.
Roberto Cavalli died at the age of 83 after a long illness. He leaves behind six children, including Giorgio, who is just over a year old. Next to him in his last hours, as for the last fifteen years, is his partner Sandra Bergman Nilsson.
Born in Florence on November 15, 1940, Cavalli always remained very attached to the city, where he moved with his mother as a child after the death of his father, who was kidnapped and executed by the Germans on July 4, 1944.
After studying at the State Art Institute of the Florentine capital, he patented a process for printing on leather and began creating patchwork pieces from materials and colors, which attracted the attention of fashion houses such as Hermès and Pierre Cardin.
The debut of the collection bearing his name took place in 1970 at the Salon du Prêt-à-Porter in Paris.
The designer reached the heights of international popularity between the nineties and the early 2000s: his feminine, sensual and edgy ready-to-wear, defined by the iconic animalistic motif, was worn by fashionistas around the world and by such stars as Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Campbell and Lady Gaga.
In 1998, the Just Cavalli line was launched with a full line of men's and women's clothing and accessories.
The sale of the fashion house took place in 2014, and in 2015 the designer went into private life. Today the brand is owned by Dubai-based investment company Vision Investments, headed by Hussein Sajwani, with creative direction in the hands of Fausto Puglisi.
