Super-expensive sneaker brand Golden Goose and a Milan-based manufacturer of plant-based synthetic leather and eco-leather are opening a joint research and development center in Milan to develop sustainable solutions.
Golden Goose is investing approximately €1,2 million to acquire a 40% ownership interest in the Coronet sustainable innovation platform based in Erba, Como, Italy.
Coronet will become the owner of the remaining 60% of the shares and will invest 1,8 million euros in production facilities and personnel. The goal is to develop materials and manufacturing processes with a lower environmental impact and ensure that at least one new form of innovation or product is released each year by Earth Day, April 22nd.
The initial goal of this partnership is to use Yatay B, a plant-based leather substitute branded Coronet, which is a sustainable alternative to natural leather (reducing CO2 emissions by 90% and water consumption by 65%).
In 2018, the company launched the Yatay unisex shoe brand to test the material's consumer appeal and durability.
Golden Goose acquired Yatay and introduced it as their new product line. The partnership's first sneaker, the Yatay 1B, is already available on the Golden Goose website for €295 (well below the price of the brand's sneakers). Yatay B sneakers are made from Yatay B leatherette, recycled polyester and biodegradable rubber.
According to Golden Goose CEO Silvio Campara, the brand does not intend to completely phase out the use of leather, but plans to eventually include more sustainable versions of key materials in its core product line.
