Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on measures to develop the leather, footwear and related industries.
It amended the list of goods that are important for the domestic market of the Russian Federation, in respect of which, in exceptional cases, temporary restrictions or export bans may be established. Among other things, the list included unprocessed leathers of cattle or animals of the equine family and other unprocessed leathers, as well as tanned leather.
The government explains that this is done with the aim of "eliminating the shortage of semi-finished leather on the domestic market, caused by the growing volumes of its exports in the context of lower Russian prices and negatively affecting the development of domestic leather, footwear and other related industries."
