Wildberries: A quarter of Russian entrepreneurs expressed their desire to fill the vacated commodity niches

The analytical service Wildberries conducted a survey (questionnaire) of more than 5 Russian entrepreneurs from 000 regions of the country. About 81% of respondents are small businesses and self-employed. About 87% of Russian business representatives predict a 51-1,5 times increase in their sales, 3% will launch their own production, and 18% will switch completely to domestic goods in 12. 

As part of the survey, analysts found out how Russian entrepreneurs adapt their business to the changing market realities in March-May and what plans they have for 2022. 

Section 1. How entrepreneurs adapt to the situation of increased volatility in the markets. 

According to the results of the survey, 62% of respondents reported that they did not change their assortment of goods, about 38% - revised their product matrix.   

About 27% of business representatives diversified their assortment to enter new niches that appeared after the departure of foreign brands. In addition, as noted by the interviewed entrepreneurs, 26% of them began to purchase more domestic products, only 13% - purchased more foreign-made products. 

According to the results of the Wildberries study, the vast majority of respondents - 70% - retained their previous logistics routes, which is obviously due to their focus on Russian and Asian manufacturers. But 30% of respondents noted that they were forced to change logistics routes: 15% of them began to use other modes of transport and types of transportation, and another 8% rebuilt supply routes, including a new logistics link in them.  

Russian entrepreneurs also noted a further rise in the cost of logistics transportation, 80% of them spoke about an increase in transportation costs compared to last year: 57% noted their increase by 10-30%, 30% - by 30-50%, and another 13% - by 50% and above.  

Representatives of domestic businesses also complained about the current lending conditions: for 97%, loans became unavailable. As a result, the largest number of respondents (about 53%) currently use only their own working capital for operating activities, without resorting to loans. 

Section 2. Entrepreneurs' plans for 2022 

Most of the entrepreneurs surveyed give optimistic forecasts for 2022. Talking about their plans, 92% of Russian business representatives expect sales growth: 51% of them expect to increase turnover by 1,5 - 3 times, 23% - more than 3 times. At the same time, entrepreneurs selling fashion goods, cosmetics and perfumery, as well as food and pet products, assess their prospects most positively. 

About 53% of respondents will choose a strategy to diversify the range and increase the depth of the existing offer, while 12% will completely transfer their business to Russian-made goods. About 18% of the interviewed entrepreneurs plan to launch their own production. 

When choosing sales channels in 2022, the vast majority (96%) of entrepreneurs expect to sell their goods through marketplaces, but 39% of them will also use their own online stores and social networks.
