Italy's footwear exports rise 2019% in the first half of 7,1

According to the Confindustria Moda Research Center for Assocalzaturifici, in the first six months of 2019, the export of footwear in Italy in value terms increased by 7,1%. At the same time, the volume of exports of Italian footwear to Russia decreased by 15%.

Exports are the only positive factor for the Italian footwear industry, the report says. (The average price per pair of shoes is now € 47.55, + 8.2%.)

The report also notes the negative impact that the uncertainty of the economic situation in foreign sales markets has on the industry. In particular, we are talking about a slowdown in economic growth in China and Germany, as well as a decrease in consumer activity in a number of countries, which are key clients for some industrial regions of Italy. These include Russia, where after the change of the negative trend in 2018, the sales of Italian footwear decreased by 15% again.

According to the report, the number of companies and the number of employees in the footwear industry continues to decline in Italy. In the first 6 months of 2019, 119 shoe factories (including both industrial and handicraft) closed in Italy, the number of companies decreased by 2,6%, the number of employees in the industry decreased by 492, or by 07% compared to the situation in December 2018 year.

There is also a decrease in the domestic consumption of footwear in Italy - after a slow decline in consumption over the past 10 years, in the first half of this year there was a sharp decline in household expenditures (-3,7% in quantitative terms).

The only segment in the footwear sector showing a positive trend in sales on the Italian domestic market is the segment of sports shoes or sneakers (+ 0.8% in terms of quantity and + 2.9% in terms of value). Sales in the segment of classic footwear for men and women show negative dynamics (-9.5% and -8.3% in value terms, respectively).

As for sales channels, the online sales segment is actively developing (+ 10,3% in volume and + 17,3% in value). Online sales now account for about 11% of total shoe sales in the country. At the same time, sales in traditional retail in the Italian market continue to fall (-11% in pairs and -16% in value).
